Jeannie Piersol ‘Gladys’ / ‘With Your Love’ (Cadet Concept / USA / 1968 / VG+) £15 £8
( New one on me? Any/everything on this highly-inventive Chicago label is worth a listen in my book and this one’s no exception – hard to pigeon-hole so I won’t even try – it’s sorta Psyche-Funk-Soul with a strong West Coast feel and a kinda detuned vocal which often sounds ‘wrong’ but then again sounds SO ‘right’ – also strong shades of Minnie Riperton / Rotary Connection here and the total key / tempo change at the end also floored me – strong dash of Freakbeat sensibility in there too – what can I say? Have a listen….beautiful harp parts here too – could that be the one and only Dorothy Ashby plucking the strings? Well. It’s the right era and right studio – so…both sides SERIOUSLY recommended…bit grubby having been in warehouse storage for years and years before being rescued…I’ll give it a good clean before I ship it… )

Barnum) and we get a lovely, warm sound – midpaced – which has had many spins on the NS scene down the years – has had many, many spins and is deffo not 100% but don’t worry too much, just whack the treble right up and get on the floor… )

Spiders Webb ‘I Don’t Know What’s On Your Mind….’ (Fantasy / UK / 1976 / Ex) £8 £4
( More killer Jazz-Funk from a golden era – just pure class all the way with a bouncing bassline, huge strings and layered vocals all riding over a wobbly guitar part – nutty breakdown midway in where Mr Keyboards is given his chance to shine..again, middle is dinked but so what – stunning 45 and one that’s always been tough to find on 7”…file nest to Lonnie ‘Liston’ Smith ‘Expansions’ etc etc… )

Joe ‘Mr G’ August ‘Tell Me’ (Instant / USA / 1960s / Ex) £8 £4
( Raucous call n’response R&B from the early-60s – this guy sounds incredibly like Georgie Fame to me? Willie Mitchell ’20-75’ / ‘Secret Home’ (London / UK / 1964 / VG+) £15 £8
( One of Willie’s rarest AND best UK releases…both sides bang it hard…in amazing shape for a 48 year old record…middle has been dinked and there are a few stickers on the label but overall it’s in damned good shape (needs a clean more than anything!) – this tune’s history goes right back to the dawn of both the Northern Soul scene and the Modernist era…Willie passed away very recently – what a talent…R.I.P, Willie… )

( TUNE…been a long time since I listened to this – 20 years? May I say that I think these guys are one of the most underrated groups of this era – their stuff always had an ‘edge’ if you know what I mean – quirky as hell, and, this is a big fave of mine – the male / female vocal interplay is just magic – killer 45 – that flute solo just floored me…I also have a UK copy for £5…same condition….Michael Stokes was a studio magician… )

( My eyes always light up when I come across anything I’ve not yet heard on this label so I was pleased when this popped up – seems to be Canadian-only? Storming uptempo Disco-Soul which actually sounds like a proto House track at some points – the flip really hots up….ok – so, it’s not as good as some of the other stuff on this ever-giving label like The Crow, Rozaa & Wine etc etc but it’s definitely ticking several boxes….great condition… )
